A bit of a Rant

Saturday, July 29, 2017 0 Comments
After 5 years abroad/sabbatical/career break, whatever polite words to sum it up, we finally decided to come back to Malaysia for good. And after a few months of settling in, with the bubb adjusting to the climate and food changes I decided to going back to work. But alas! I have been away for far too long that my chances of going back to Infra support is slim with a gleam of hope

I had been working with UNIX and Linux servers. And to top if off, I have 3 certifications to boot. Is RHCSA a common thing now?

I have exhausted my contacts and friends' help for job vacancies and I spend an hour daily on Jobstreet trying my luck. Yesterday I started to look for Service Desk positions. Yes, gasp all you want

Yes, to go back to where I left off 5 years ago I have to start from the very bottom. Again.

After numerous interviews and promising leads I am close to giving up entirely. Have I waited too long? What if I hadn't left the industry 5 years ago?

It's not the money I am in for, you can see my travels, I have been to places most people can't afford to go. I stayed in one of the richest country in the Gulf and had really a good time raising my son

But you know what they say, all good things must come to an end

Is this my end?

I hope not. That is why I am going thru my notes and virtual server and blogging all sort of UNIX and LINUX related stuffs, in an event that I don't nail that technical interview, the link to my blog (I hope) will be my saving messiah

I wished I can shout out and tell the world

HEY, THERE'S A BRILLIANT MIND SITTING HERE BRIMMING WITH KNOWLEDGE WAITING TO BE DISCOVERED!!!

From now onwards, my blog link will be the one and only thing I put in my pitch whenever I apply for a Jobstreet position

KL Review: Reka Playhouse @The Gateway Mall

Wednesday, July 12, 2017 0 Comments
The playhouse is new, because the mall itself is new. The Gateway Mall opened on May 15th. And because the playhouse is new, they are having promotion. For children between ages 2-12 the one-time entrance fee is RM 20

I had joined as a member where I get a rebate of RM 30 (in vouchers that I can use for 2 free entries-one during registration and the other RM 20 as a one-time entry, and the remaining RM 10 off for yet another day) They also give me a card with 10 rings, and all entries; free or not are stamped on this card and once you have 9 stamps the 10th entry is free and you get a new card. I have so far collected 4 stamps

The benefits of being a member is of course the reduced entrance fee, and also some discount for using their party room

On their premises, Reka has

  • a microwave to heat up food for your children
  • hot-water thermos to make milk, etc
  • cold drinks, sold
  • sausages, sold
  • lockers
  • shoe racks
  • toilet, but they don't allow you to take a dump in there
  • CCTV monitors all over the place
  • bean bags for tired parents to sit down
  • free balloons for kids
  • the place is for children from ages 2 till 12

You need to wear socks to go in the playhouse and they sell socks-but they're not cheap. Just walk to DIY at the other end and get a pair for under RM 2

I have been there many times and the place is usually deserted on weekdays and even on weekends there are only a handful of kids playing. They allow 2 adults per child but I have gone with 3 adults and they are fine (probably because I was the only one over there)

The place can get chilly because of their air conditioning so wear long sleeves clothing (that goes for your children too) and most important of all don't forget your socks!

KL Review: Jason Cheong Dental Surgery Bangsar

Wednesday, July 12, 2017 1 Comments
Few weeks ago, I noticed 3 visible dents in my son's teeth and also a bit decaying-the early signs of caries in his baby teeth. I had been a poor parent, neglecting to brush his teeth regularly and especially at bedtime. I had also allowed him to nurse (he is going to be 3, yes!) at night and it has taken its toll

I asked around on Facebook and I was given a name for a pediatric dentist in Bangsar. His clinic is just across Bala's Banana Leaf restaurant

And he is a fantastic doctor. He is good with children, there are plenty of toys and books to keep children of all ages occupied. They also have tiny chairs for children. The ambiance was neat, clean and the staffs were friendly

I had walked in without an appointment at 10 am and they had slotted me in at 12 pm. My son occupied himself with the toys there and the whole experience was very nice. In the dental room, they had TV mounted on the wall for children to watch while he checks their mouth. When my son went it, it was tuned to Dora

The whole check-up lasted no more than 10 minutes and after that was the usual Q and A about his teeth care and I was told to stop nursing him altogether. He also informed me that Viaan's final 4 molars are coming out because his gums were swollen at the back of his mouth. I was also given a tooth mousse to apply on his teeth before he goes to sleep because second to brushing, the mousse will strengthen his teeth and works as a barrier to decay

And now for the grand finale-the tab on the whole thing cost me RM 160 (RM 80 for consultation and RM 80 for the mousse) It is a fair rate, given the location of the dental clinic (prime area) and the service provided. More good news to come when I went to collect his mousse from the receptionist. She informed me clients are only charged for consultation for their first visit, and all subsequent consultations are free. I will only be charged with procedure done. She went in detail to explain this to me. No way in any dental clinic, let alone a pediatric dental clinic will check your children's teeth for free. But at Dr Cheong's, it is free

Now that's what I call a deal!

Here's the link to their FB page. Alternatively, you can ring them at 03-2287 9187 to make an appointment

Their address is  36, Jalan Telawi, Bangsar Baru, 5

Please note that this is not a paid review, it is just my take based on my personal experience

Just look at the pricing for teeth whitening, there are many options and prices available to meet everyone's budget needs

I was allowed to take pictures of my son's teeth from the doctor's monitor

Doha Review: Doha International Book Fair 2016

Monday, July 10, 2017 0 Comments
I am a little too late for the review, but I will sum it up very shortly. It was a waste of time, and because it was too far out of town-also a waste of money.

It is however, worth it if you are a Qatari because there are plenty of aisles of books in Arab and only 4 aisles for English books

And the worst part is everyone takes a 2 hour lunch break daily so the booths are closed at that time

I spent about QR 100 just travelling to this god forsaken place. Never again

And the books are expensive, you can get better books and bargain at Jarir Bookstore
